The Nuances of the Upper Level Distribution: What Every Advisor Should Know

Did you know…

  • Courses used to satisfy major requirements MAY NOT be used to satisfy the upper-level distribution.
  • Students MAY use courses from the upper-level distribution to satisfy requirements in their minor or second major
    • EX.  A biology major who is minoring in Spanish may use a Spanish literature course for upper-level distribution foreign studies.
    • EX.  A sociology major who is double majoring in political science may take three political science courses from the upper-level distribution list, e.g. Political Science 330 and 311 for US Studies; Political Science 365 for Foreign Studies.
  • Remember the European restriction!  Students who take History 241 – 242 (Western Civilization) or Medieval Studies 201-202 to satisfy the non-US history requirement MAY NOT choose Europe under upper-level distribution.
  • Students pursuing the BA from the College of Arts & Sciences must take three upper-level distribution courses from the approved lists, with at least one US Studies course and one course from Foreign Studies.  Students pursuing the BS must take two upper-level distribution courses, one course from US Studies and one course from Foreign Studies.
