Petition Guidelines
- Requested via the petitioning process
- Are reviewed by the University’s General Education Committee and/or the College of Arts and Sciences
- Do not change the academic history
- Are posted on the students’ DARS report
General Education
Refer the following to one of the six General Education Committees using the designated General Education Petition Form:
- Communicating Through Writing
- Communicating Orally
- Natural Science
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Social Science – List A
- Arts & Humanities
- Cultures and Civilizations
(if both Non-U.S. History and Foreign Language require substitutions)
*Only applies to catalogs beginning in 2004
Arts & Sciences
Refer the following to the College of Arts & Sciences using the designated Arts & Sciences Petition Form:
- Foreign Language substitutions
- Non-US History
(if intermediate language competency complete) - Third natural science
(once general education is met) - Social Science 3rd and 4th courses for BA students
- Third humanities
(once general education is met) - Upper-Level Distribution
- Pre-requisites to Major and Major requirements
(routed to academic departments for review)
*For catalogs prior to 2004, all petitions are written on the Arts and Sciences petition form
