Majors
The curriculum requirements are intended to give breadth to the student's program, while the major provides the element of depth in an area (s) of special interest. Each student is required to select at least one area of major concentration except for College Scholars; and to do approximately 20-32% of their total course work in that area. More than 60 majors and concentrations are available. In addition, students with particular interests may develop more than one major if they wish. Thus, this requirement is made sufficiently flexible to meet the needs of any student in the College.
Courses to be counted in the major may NOT be taken S/NC unless they are offered only on that grading basis. Appropriate transfer work may be counted toward the major, but at least 9 hours of the major must be taken at UT, Knoxville. A grade of C or better must be earned in every course counted toward the major. Generally, this grade requirement does not apply to prerequisites and co-requisites. However, several majors have progression standards which require students to complete prerequisites and co-requisites with a certain GPA before the student is eligible to progress into the major. Consult the Undergraduate Catalog for specific major requirements.
What Undergraduate Catalog are you following?
Students typically follow the Catalog of the year that they entered the University of Tennessee. Students can select to "move up" in Catalog year, but never have the option to go back to a catalog published before they entered the University.
