Electives
The remainder of the student's course work is completely at his discretion. The only restriction the College has placed on the "elective" portion of the student's program is that there must be enough upper-division credit hours (300 level and above) to make a total of 42 upper-division hours (including upper-division hours in the major and Distributions). There is no minimum number of elective hours which must be taken in Arts and Sciences, and there is no maximum number which may be taken in any one department.
Some students' choices will be limited by their own post-baccalaureate education or career plans. For example, the pre-medical or pre-dental student will have to include courses in the sciences required for admission to medical or dental school and the prospective elementary or secondary school teacher will need to include the appropriate professional courses required for state certification.
Other students will want to use a portion of their elective time to develop a second major or a minor. From the College's point of view however, this portion of the curriculum is truly elective.
