Message from the Dean
It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee. Our College is the largest at our great University—we are the home for 25 departments and schools that span the spectrum of disciplines in the fine and dramatic arts, the humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the natural sciences. The more than 600 faculty in the College are world-class teachers and scholars who produce important research, books, exhibits and productions that bring international acclaim to our University and the State of Tennessee.
Our College is also the home for a multitude of multidisciplinary programs that cross traditional academic boundaries and seek to provide education and scholarship that are particularly relevant in an increasingly complex and interlinked world. I encourage you to follow the links on our Web page to learn more about our departments, schools, and programs.
We pledge to teach you, challenge you, and encourage you to think both deeply and broadly. Our goal is to provide you with a rich intellectual experience in the arts and sciences that will prepare you to think critically about your world in ways you might not have thought possible. We want to prepare you to be thoughtful and thought-provoking citizens who will use your UT experience in the arts and sciences to enhance your future and our future. If you are one of our many undergraduates who plan additional study after completing a baccalaureate degree, we will also prepare you superbly for postgraduate or professional study.
The arts and sciences are the traditional heart of the academic endeavor, and we are delighted to have you as part of it. We hope you enjoy the experience and enjoy the excellence of the arts and sciences at the University of Tennessee.
Bruce Bursten
Dean, College of Arts & Sciences
